Younger People with Dementia

Some charities we support with a long-term commitment because they fit the goals that we have as trustees. Some charities are brought to our attention by the staff of the main business because they are personally impacted by the work of the charity. Younger People with Dementia are currently supporting one of our team who is experiencing this condition with a relative of theirs.

YPWD are a very local charity to us as they cover Berkshire, Northeast Hampshire and Surrey which is the area directly surrounding our office.

Young onset dementia is defined as diagnosis before the age of 65 and there are thought to be 71,000 individuals nationally with this diagnosis and 1,500 locally. Fortunately, that is a small proportion of the population but for the individuals involved and their families, it can take a huge toll.

A large part of the work that the charity does is to support sufferers and their carers. An early diagnosis of dementia can lead to a loss of employment, social life and family life for both the person diagnosed and the person who is the main carer. Often it means that the retirement that has been planned by a couple is never fully lived, as the condition robs them of future they had planned together.

As trustees we were very pleased to support YPWD with a donation last year and will continue to support where we can.
